  • Notes
    • From what I learned from my Aunt's who are deceased, the family moved to Russia from Germany due to Catherine the Great and her proclamation that the Germans were welcome. They were given the worst area to farm, the Southern Volga river area [snip] actually lived near Odessa and Worms Russia. Along the Volga River. They lived in barracks until they could build shacks.

Since they were a German colony, they continued to speak German. Over time the language turned into a dialect of Russian and German. No longer High German or pure German. My Grandparents were born in Russia in the German Colony.

When the Germans immigrated to America, the language definitely was a problem. My fathers side was Nail, changed to Nagel. Nagel means, nail, in German. LOL. My great grandfather did not want people to know they were Germans so, he refused to let his family speak German. He demanded they only speak English. My Grandfather George Long, originally Lang, was not that way. He and Eva spoke little English in the home. They did speak German and Grandma never spoke English. Well, unless she wanted to get a salesperson off the phone, then she spoke perfect English! She was funny! I learned some German songs from her, I don't remember them any more. Just bits and pieces. My oldest cousin remembers them quite well.

NOTE: Nancy has the coincidence of a Winder/Winter German-Russian ancestry and being married to the English Winders line, i.e., her grandmother was Eva Winder Long (name originally "Winter" of Germany, then Russia) and her husband is Jerry Winders (descendant of the Thomas Winder-Sarah Bull line). //Deven Winders Lewis
