- (Research):Obituary provided by M.I. Lumpkin: Mr. George Staples [sic] Winder died at the Soldier's Home in Richmond and his remains were brought to this place and laid beside his wife in the Ephesus Baptist cemetery. Rv. Dupuy of the Rappahannock Christian Chruch officiated.
Mr. Winder was 81 years of age. He was formerly a resident of Accomac County, but moved to Essex after his service in the Civil War and remained a citizen of the county until his death. Joel Winder is his only surviving son and Mr. R. H. Sisson, of Dunbrooke, Va., is his only surviving daughter. Mandrid [sic] Q. Lumkin is one of his grandsons. Mr Winder took charge of Mandrid after the death of his mother and treated him as if he had been his own son. The mutual devotion between the two deserves mention, for they were faithful to each other to the end. Mr. Winder was full of dry humor, and the writer recalls with laughter some of his stories so full of human nature and rich in humor. Some of these may be before the public ere long. George Winder was a faithful soldier and a Christian gentleman. Peace to his ashes.
The above was accompanied by this letter: November 27, 2005 Ann. I am sending you more information about Geo. S. Winder than you probably want. I don't know any more about the civil war papers then what is written on them. The Winder lineage was written by a Winder family member and given to me years ago. All that are mentioned have been dead for many years. Mary Magdalene Winder (Lumpkin) was my grandmother. She died at the age of 19 in 1897 when my father was born. As mentioned in the obit., my father was raised by Geo. S. His name is spelled wrong. It should be Manrid the same as mine. I have stayed in touch with the Winders all of my life. My father told me that Geo. S. was Jewish and his family disowned him when he married a Christian. This story was also passed on by Joel Winder (his son) to his family. Joel was my great uncle and I knew him well. Geo. S. was living with my parents in about 1920. He was about 80 yrs old then. My parents told me a beautiful story about one of his siblings and other family members visiting him. They had traveled a great distance, driving one of those old cars over dirt roads which must have been a challenge in those days. As my parents described it, they sat under a shade tree in the yard holding hands with tears in their eyes going over the past 60 years of their lives. Years in which they had no communication. Considering the above, I hane always thought of myself as being 1/8th Jewish. After reading the Gen Winder book. I don't know. All of the Winders mentioned are Christians and they came from the same area as Geo.S. Winder. Is there now or was there a Jewish branch of the Winder family? M.I. Tom Lumptin

Reference the 1870 US Census that I sent you- Note that his son, George, listed in his household. gave his age as 29 years, and that he was married to Mary E., not, repeat not, Ann. In the 1900 US Census, we find Geo. S. Winder, head of household, gave his birth month and year as February 1839. His wife was Mary E. In the 1920 US Census wie find George Winder, age 80, widowed, an inmate of the Confederate Soldiers Home in Richmond. George Winder was aprivate in Co C, 24th VA Confederate Cavalry. He was also known as George S. Window, according to his listing. G. S. Winder filed for a Confederate pension from Essex County, VA So, George Winder, bio #23473, should be GEORGE S. WINDER, and not George E. Winder, I do believe, as George S. Winder, son of John Dennis Winder, was married to (according to Ollie Clarke, Mary E. Brooke which the census records seem to corroborate.

Something to add to your Winder tree, maybe you already have it. George Savage Winder was my great grandfather (his obit. lists his middle name as Staples). Born Mar.10 1839 died Oct 12 1924 at the Confederate Soldiers home in Richmond Virginia. He was buried in Ephesus Baptist Cemetery, Essex County, Virginia. He served in the Confererate Cavalry during the Civil war. After the war he spent the rest of his life in Essex County, but he formely lived in Accomac County Virginia. I know nothing of his ancestry but he has many descendants in Virginia today. M.I. Tom Lumpkin, Silver Spring Maryland
From James B. Winder, 25 Aug 2012
I am not sure I can help but I will try . The information on George Savage Winder ( my great grand father) that was provided by M.I. "Tom" Lumpkin ( he is also a relative on mine) is incorrect. I have gotten a copy of George Savage Winder's death certificate . His parents were George Winder born in Northhamption County Virginia about 1800, be died between 1840 and 1850. His mother was Anna Small Winder born about 1800 , I know she was still living in 1874 when she started raising 5 grandchildren upon the death of the daughter Charlotte Winder Colony (1830 to 2/10/1874) she was married to William Colony who died in March 1870 of diphtheria. George and Anna also had a son John A. Winder born about 1834. He married Elizabeth Jane Chesser on Jan 20,1874. This was his second marriage. George Savage's grandfather was Robert Winder born about 1775. My family tree is Winder family on ancestry.com , it is open for review and it is still a work in progress. I am not very good with a computer due to drugs I have to take for a back injury so please bear with me on mistakes and misspelling. My name is James B. Winder Sr. but I go by Jim. My Father was Bradley O' Neal Winder, son of Joel Brooke Winder , Son of George Savage Winder. Mr Lumpkin based his information on 1870 census. John D. and Esther A. were the parents of George W. Winder. I know the problem since George Savage and his wife Mary Elizabeth does not appear on the 1870 census. George Savage was a Riverboat Captain working on the Rappannock River . He and his wife appear in the 1880 census . They lived in Essex County Virginia. His wife Mary Elizabeth is still a bit of a mystery. Her father's name was Philip Brooke. I have not been able to find records on him yet. The problem is the spelling of the last name.It may have been spelled Broocke or some other variation. I hope this help. Please stay in touch.
Jim
