- According to the biography of Henry F. Winders, a son of John Winders and Elizabeth Paden (History of Hancock County, Ohio, by Robert C. Brown, Warner, Beers & Co., Chicago, Ill.), John Winders was "a native of Shenandoah County, Va., and of pioneer stock of that State." That John was a "native" of Shenandoah is possible, but unlikely. It is more likely that John was born in Maryland in 1793, but moved with his father, Thomas Winders, to Shenandoah County, VA, circa 1795-1796. Thomas Winders first began appearing in the Shenandoah County tax records in 1796; it is believed that he was the Thomas Winders in Washington County, Maryland, in the 1790 census, his last appearance in census records prior to his death in 1809 (no census for Shenandoah County exists for 1800). It is possible that Thomas had moved from Maryland to Shenandoah County, VA, as early as 1793. However, note that the 1850 census for John Winders indicates he was born in Maryland. This contradiction of Virginia verus Maryland was also found in the records of John's brother, Clement Winders.
We would expect John Winders to begin appearing in the Shenandoah County tax records in approximately 1814, when he turned 21. However, because he does not appear in the Shenandoah tax records, it is possible he had already ventured into Ohio along with other Shenandoah County men of the Winders family acquaintance, who were moving in large numbers into Ohio about that time. We have not made a search for John in Ohio tax records.
John Winders has not been located in the census records prior to his 1830 census appearance in Fairfield County, Ohio, where he married Elizabeth Paden in 1830, four years after serving as administrator of the Fairfield County, Ohio estate of his brother, William Winders. It is likely that John had been in the area of Fairfield County, in particular Richland Township, for a number of years prior to 1830 - according to the probate record of John's brother, William Winders, William was a supervisor of a portion of the Ohio Canal project (probably Licking Reservoir, now Buckeye Lake near Rushville) at the time of his death (probably accidental, as William was a young man at the time), and John completed the Canal reservoir project begun by William (as stated in the probate record). It seems likely that John had been working on the project in 1826 before William's death. John Winders and Elizabeth Paden were married by Rev. Henry Fernandes of Rushville Township (where William Winders was buried in 1826) and their son, Henry Fernandes Winders, was named for the Reverend, suggesting a close friendship that may have pre-dated 1830.
This John Winders has sometimes been mistaken as John Winders of Union, Ross County, Ohio (who was in Ross County in the 1830 census, while our John appears in Richland Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, in the 1830 census, after having married Elizabeth Paden there in May of that year). According to the research of Robert Winder (a descendant of James Winder, brother of John's father, Thomas), the Winders of Ross County were descendants of John Winder and Margaret Briggs of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, who were Quakers, settling in Ross County, Ohio, by 1798, based on Gershom Perdue's Memoranda of Early Settlement of Friends in the Northwest Territory. John and Margaret Briggs Winder had a son, James, married to Deborah Allen; James and Deborah had a son, John, who married Mary Crozier in Ross County, Ohio on March 24, 1821. Their last child was born in Ross County in 1832, so it is likely the John Winders married to Mary Crozier is the one appearing in the 1830 census for Ross County. He ultimately moved his family to Goshen, Indiana, where he appeared in the 1850 census. [Deven Lewis, 2011-deven00@charter.net]

Here's some information that just came to me from Beverly Kelly. It is a Bible record of the John Winders (b. 1793) and Elizabeth Paden Winders family; John was born in Shenandoah County, VA, and is thought to be a son of Thomas Winders of the Thomas Winders/Sarah Bull line. According to info accompanying the Bible record, John Winders moved to Fairfield County, OH, from Shenandoah County, VA when he was 16 years old (c. 1809): "Their Bible was published by Thomas Mason & George Lane, for the Methodist Episcopal Church, at the Conference Office, 200 Mullberry Street, New York - James Collard Printer, 1839. It is presently owned by Ara Frazer (Mrs. Harley B.) Dreisbach, 853 South Main Street, Findlay, Ohio. (Harley's mother was b. 1849, so they have passed on). All entries up to 1881 were made in the same quaint handwriting. After that date entries were made by another person, someone familiar with the relationships. We doubt that it was Mrs. Dreisbach, else she would have included her own marriage and data about her own family.
John Winders and Elizabeth Paden was married May the 6, 1830.
H.F. Winders and A.L. Wiseman was married June 22, 1854.
Lambert Hill and Martha M. Winders was married March 15/1855.

Ill.
S C Moore and S A Winders was maried Oct the 1/1868.
D T Winders and Carline Swartz was maried March 31/1870.
C E Jordan and Elizabeth Winders (Widow of John Winders) were married Sept. 10, 1874.
Elizabeth Paden was born March the 10, 1812.
John Winders was born in 1793.
Henry F. Winders was born on the 2 day of May 1831.
Martha Montgomery Wiinders was born on the 25 day of November 1833.

On a separate e-mail exchange, Ann asked me to share info I had from Bill Johns RE a John Winders who married Elizabeth Paden; their son, Henry F. Winders, was born 2 May, 1831 in Fairfield Co., OH. John Winders was "a native of Shenandoah County, VA and of pioneer stock of that state" according to the book excerpt I have from Bill. Son Henry married Araminta Wiseman.
Thomas Winder(s) of Shenandoah County (son of James Winder and Elizabeth Sherwood pursuant to chancery suit records), arrived in Shenandoah County, VA by 1796, according to tax records; he died there in 1807. We are sure that Thomas had two sons: Thomas Jr. (married Susannah Evans in 1800) and Clement (our g.g.g.grandfather, who married Molly Bixler in 1814-she's the one buried in the Taylor plot in Columbus, OH). However, we suspect Thomas may have had three additional sons: William, James and John. Here's why:
William: A William Winters/Winders mysteriously appears for 2 years - 1823 and 1824 in the tax records along with Clement (Isabella Twp, Shenandoah Cty, VA). A William Winders of Richland Twp, Fairfield County, OH, was a supervisor on the Ohio Canal and died or was killed in 1826. Clement's name is among the estate papers, and tax records for Clement in OH lead us to believe that he, too, was working on the Ohio Canal, perhaps induced there by brother(?) William.
James: Only appearance of a James in connection with the Thomas of Shenandoah County is in the estate records of Thomas. A James Winders and a Nancy Winders purchased items at the 1810 estate sale. We assume they are married; no James Winders appears in the Shen. Cty tax records from 1796-1830, so we assume they were not permanently living in Shen. Cty.
John: A John Winders was the administrator of the estate of the William Winders, above. Could be William's son, but it is also possible that it was a brother, John. The John Winders who married Elizabeth Paden, who is said to be a "native of Shenandoah Cty" would have to have belonged to a Shenandoah Cty. Winders family in the late 1790s or early 1800s; we have to date found only our Thomas Winder(s) in the records of Shenandoah County during that time period. We also find Clement in the Fairfield Co., OH tax records approximately 1829 to 1834, placing him there at the same time as John and Elizabeth (Paden).
That's our theory--just haven't been able to PROVE it!
