    John R. Winder Jr., 78, died Friday (April 7, 2000) at his home in Newton.

    He was born Sept. 17, 1921, in Abbyville to John Reuben Sr. and Amy Belle (Schnurr) Winder. He married Evelyn Hoyt Nov. 25, 1948, in Wichita. She survives of Newton.

    He was a farm worker. He also worked at the war department in Washington, D.C., as a clerk at the Reno County Courthouse, in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and as a Santa Fe passenger agent.

    He was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Newton, where he served as a vestry clerk of the church. He sang in choirs at high school, acapalla junior choir and St. Matthew's church. He was in forensics competitions and drama. He enjoyed traveling, ballroom dancing, gardening and photography. He was certified master gardener and a landscape architecture.

    He served as a sergeant during World War II from 1942 to 1946 in the U.S. Army.

    Other survivors include: one son, David James Winder of Claremore, Okla.; two daughters, Lynda Diane Hurley of Livingston, N.J., and Debra Lynn Winder of Great Bend; and seven grandchildren.

    He was preceded in death by his parents.

    Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Matthews Episcopal Church with the Rev. Joyce W. Holmes officiating. Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Abbyville Cemetery in Abbyville.

    Friends may call until 9 p.m. today with family greeting friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Petersen Funeral Home.

    Memorials have been established with St. Matthew's Episcopal Church OEF Fund or American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
