Ann,
I have the following information about Lota Winder- she was married to Charles Franklin Hudgins (15 Aug 1853-1934) and had 5 children-
1. Carroll Hudgins (no dates available)
2.Susan Hudgins who died in 1918. Susan Hudgins married John Paul Spence and had a son, Charles Hudgins Spence who married Margaret Mott.
3.Virginia Hudgins( no information)
4. Alma Hudgins who married Thomas Jeter Johnson and
5. Frances Hudgins who married Roland Leo Portlock.
Charles Franklin Hudgins was the son of Mary Diggs (1821-1907) and Lewis Hudgins (1797-1866) . Lewis was Mary's first husband and Mary was Lewis's second wife. after Lewis died, Mary married a William James. All of this took place in Mathews Co. VA.
Now, I have another Winder for you...Lewis Hudgins and his first wife, Elizabeth L. Williams, had a son, William Penn Hudgins b. 17 June 1826...he married Anne Keeble and they had a daughter, Ida Lee Hudgins (1859-1937) who married a Capt. John Winder. I don't know if the two Winders are connected or not. Again, all of this took place, to my knowledge, in and around Mathews Co. VA.
Hope this is of some help to you. This Capt. John Winder may have been from the Maryland area as I believe he was a ship's captain for Lewis Hudgins who was a prolific ship builder during the 1800's in Mathews Co.
