Winder, my grandfather is Godfried Benjamin Winder, born in Russia, 28 June 1886. My father is Donald Winder, born 16 Jan 1913. The Mary Winder who married George Blehm 2 Feb 1909 is a sister to Godfried Winder. Grandfather Winder and his siblings were all born in Russia. They were "Germans from Russia". They came to the United States in 1905. [snip] No, as far as I know, there were no Jewish connections. They originated in Germany, and at some point in time they migrated to Russia. The Winders came from the colonies of Tscherbakowka (Scherbagefka), Awilowa, and the Arch adae, all on the Bergseite of the Volga. There is a Conrad John Winder (Godfried's older brother), who was born 24 August 1879. The name Winder was later determined to orginally have been Winter, but they kept the name Winder. In Windsor Colorado where they settled, there were also in the surrounding towns families with the name Winter, no relation with my Winder's as far as we known. Of which very little is known at this time, his 2 sons were Peter and Jacob. JACOB G. WINTER Sr. - The youngest in the family and the only one to come to USA, went to Oklahoma for a very short time then on to Windsor Co, This is the "UNCLE JACOB WINDER" to George Steinert. The spelling was changed to have the pronunciation closer to the spelling VEENder. After a while there were too many Winders to change them all back to Winter. They are the same family origins from Peter in Germany. Jacob became a very successful Sugar Beet famer and owned his farm outside of Windsor, Co. Ivey connection is Chloe Ivey wife of Daniel Ivey and daughter of Robert Ivey. Sutton-Taylor family connection of Dennie Hines is still being reviewed but Christine's related note on Daniel Hines marriage to 2 different daughters of Issac Hines & Barbara Hardy looks like a good bet. Will hopefully talk to Doris Elmore Creel in Kinston tomorrow in hopes she can shed some additional light on these questions. Thanks for the dates regarding Mary Jane Hines & Benjamin Sutton...looks like it is possible that mary Jane Hines was a sister of Lewis Hines or possibly a first cousin looking at the years involved. Still digging around this nagging problem ... these Hines lines are like a giant jigsaw puzzle with a few pieces missing. Thanks again.
