According to ... source 'Artists in Ohio,
1787-1900: A Biographical Dictionary' by Jeffrey Weidman (published by
Kent State University Press in 2000 as a 3-volume set, seen in Google
books) page 956:

"Winder, William W. Sign, banner, ornamental, and house painter, active
in Cincinnati (Hamilton Co) from 1853 to 1897. He was born in
*Hagerstown*, Maryland, *October 27, 1836*, a son of Daniel Winder, a
preacher, editor and physician."

The dictionary also mentions William W's son Will H as a "sign painter,
active in Cincinnati (Hamilton Co) from 1880 to 1891 or later. Born in
Ohio about 1862, he was a son of William W. Winder and his wife
Valeria".

253 (Research):From John Winder (2013):
I started to put together in narrative form what I've found out
about the WInderses who went Washington County => Ogle County -- that
would be the brothers John and Elias Upton Winders, their cousins Hiram
and John N. Winders, and a fifth (so far unconnected)--John M. Winders,
who married Elizabeth J. Knodle out in Ogle County in 1854. Of course,
as soon as one starts writing, one starts going back over and
double-checking things, just to be sure, and in the process of doing
that this morning, I ran across a loose end in Pine Creek Township of
Ogle County--an Elizabeth Winders, age 20 shows up in the 1850 census
there, living in the household of Henry Artz and his family. In the
same 1850 census (enumerated by the same person, to judge from the hand
writing), in Mount Morris, Illinois, there is an Elizabeth Knodle, age
20, living in the household of Benjamin Swingley and his family, along
with a Jacob Knodle, age 8 months.
So my question is, who is this Elizabeth Winders, born about 1830,
living by herself with the Artz family in Pine Creek Twp? And if John
M. Winders in fact married Elizabeth Knodle in Polo in 1854, what became
of little Jacob? The 1870 census shows her (as Winder, Ann E.) in Mount
Morris with children Kate (14), Bayard F. (12), Elbert (9) and John
(7). She is called "Mrs. E. Winders" in the 1865 Illinois census, with
3 boys under 10 and a daughter plus self--no husband John noted in
either 1865 or 1870, as he apparently died shortly after Elbert was
born. (And just as a by the way, evidently John M. and Elizabeth
(Knodle) Winders lived briefly in Iowa around 1858, since Bayard was
born in Iowa, whereas all the other kids were born in Illinois).

257 (Research):From Wikipedia, May 2014:
The tale of Hiram Abiff as passed down in Masonic Lodges underpins the third degree. It starts with his arrival in Jerusalem, and his appointment by Solomon as chief architect and master of works at the construction of his temple. As the temple is nearing completion, three fellowcraft masons from the workforce ambush him as he leaves the building, demanding the secrets of a master mason. Hiram is challenged by each in turn, and at each refusal to divulge the information his assailant strikes him with a mason's tool (differing between jurisdictions). He is injured by the first two assailants, and struck dead by the last.[8] His murderers hide his body under a pile of rubble, returning at night to move the body outside the city, where they bury it in a shallow grave marked with a sprig of acacia. As the Master is missed the next day, Solomon sends out a group of fellowcraft masons to search for him. The loose acacia is accidentally discovered, and the body exhumed to be given a decent burial. The hiding place of the "three ruffians" is also discovered, and they are brought to justice. Solomon informs his workforce that the secrets of a master mason are now lost. He replaces them with substitutes (based on gestures given and words spoken upon the discovery of Hiram's body).[9] Such is the general legend as related in the Anglo-American jurisdictions.

In Continental Freemasonry the tale is slightly different: a large number of master masons (not just Hiram) are working on the Temple, and the three ruffians are seeking the passwords and signs that will give them a higher wage. The result is the same, but this time it is master masons who find the body. The secrets are not lost, but Solomon orders them buried under the Temple, inscribed on Hiram's grave, and the same substitution is made as a mark of respect. The secrets "lost" in the other tradition are here given to new master masons as part of their ritual. In this version, Hiram is often renamed Adoniram.[10]

I have Sarah Ellen Winder's parents noted as James or John Winder and wife Sarah.
Sarah Ellen was called Sallie and was born in Kentucky on 28 September 1818 and died in Washington Township, Harrison County, Indiana on 13 February 1888. Sarah and Peter were married on 24 November 1839 and had nine children , some born in Kentucky and some in Indiana. From the birth places of the children, it appears Peter and Sarah lived in Kentucky between 1848 and 1857 and returned to Indiana before late 1859. There are listed in the Washington Township, Harrison County, Indiana 1860 census. (Cynthia Burd has researched Pete's family and may have done Winders.)
Peter Moyars was born 23 april 1817 and died in Harrison county 10 October 1894.
You will find Moyars spelled as Moyers, Moyer, Myer, Myers, Moirs, etc. It is German and there were lots of families using those spellings in Pennsylvania and Virginia. Peter Moyers father was John who was born in Virginia and moved to Indiana; John's grandfather was Casper Moyers who moved form Pennsylvania to Virginia.
Many of the Myers/Moyers families were members of "plain" churches (Mennonite, Brethern, etc) and these churches have extensive family history collections at their collges

I am a descendant of David Holobaugh and Elizabeth Ann Winders Holobaugh. They are listed in your database. I also know that there is a strong connection between the Winders and the Park and Dent families. I am trying to find the parents of my 3rd.Great-Grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Winders Holobaugh 1822-1890.
I know that there is a connection between the Josiah Dent family and the Winders family in Lawrence County, AR. There was one named William Patton Dent. Could this be for Patton Winders. Could Patton Winders have been the father of Elizabeth Ann? Other names were: Henry Hampton Winders, Naomi Nonissa Winders, William Washington Winders, Chambers Nesbitt Winders. Do you know of these?? I will be glad to exchange information.. Thank you!!

Per History of Lawrence County, Arkansas: David Green Holobaugh (1813-1861), and his wife, Elizabeth Ann Winders, came to Lawrence County, Arkansas, in 1845 from Shelby County, Tennessee. David was of Pennsylvania Dutch (german) ancestry, being the son of John George Holobaugh and Margaret Inness of Rowan County, North Carolina, near the town of «b»Salisbury. The parents of John George Holobaugh were George Holobaugh and Susanna Savitz. Relatives from Rowan County, NC (Winders, Dent, Park and Gibbens) also came to Lawrence County. Other close relatives, John Mathis Hollabaugh, George A. Hollabaugh and James Calvin Hollabaugh came to Pope, Searcy and Washington Counties in Arkansas, respectively. David Holobaugh and his wife took up land and lived near Black Rock and Imboden. He was a farmer, depty sheriff, and road overseer. Seven children were born to this union: Susan A., John David "Bud", Green Paul, James Harvey, Mary M., Narcissa Ellen, and Lucinda Elizabeth Holobaugh. John David and Green Paul left Lawrence County in 1864 when Union troops marched through the area. John joined the service and was part of the a Missouri unit. Green was too young for the service and eventually went to Texas and died there in 1892. Narcissa Ellen married Stephen Jasper Park and lived in the Portia area. Lucinda Elizabeth married William Park, brother of Stephen and moved to Roseburg, Oregon.

Here's some information that just came to me from Beverly Kelly. It is a Bible record of the John Winders (b. 1793) and Elizabeth Paden Winders family; John was born in Shenandoah County, VA, and is thought to be a son of Thomas Winders of the Thomas Winders/Sarah Bull line. According to info accompanying the Bible record, John Winders moved to Fairfield County, OH, from Shenandoah County, VA when he was 16 years old (c. 1809): "Their Bible was published by Thomas Mason & George Lane, for the Methodist Episcopal Church, at the Conference Office, 200 Mullberry Street, New York - James Collard Printer, 1839. It is presently owned by Ara Frazer (Mrs. Harley B.) Dreisbach, 853 South Main Street, Findlay, Ohio. (Harley's mother was b. 1849, so they have passed on). All entries up to 1881 were made in the same quaint handwriting. After that date entries were made by another person, someone familiar with the relationships. We doubt that it was Mrs. Dreisbach, else she would have included her own marriage and data about her own family.
John Winders and Elizabeth Paden was married May the 6, 1830.
H.F. Winders and A.L. Wiseman was married June 22, 1854.

On a separate e-mail exchange, Ann asked me to share info I had from Bill Johns RE a John Winders who married Elizabeth Paden; their son, Henry F. Winders, was born 2 May, 1831 in Fairfield Co., OH. John Winders was "a native of Shenandoah County, VA and of pioneer stock of that state" according to the book excerpt I have from Bill. Son Henry married Araminta Wiseman.

Thomas Winder(s) of Shenandoah County (son of James Winder and Elizabeth Sherwood pursuant to chancery suit records), arrived in Shenandoah County, VA by 1796, according to tax records; he died there in 1807. We are sure that Thomas had two sons: Thomas Jr. (married Susannah Evans in 1800) and Clement (our g.g.g.grandfather, who married Molly Bixler in 1814-she's the one buried in the Taylor plot in Columbus, OH). However, we suspect Thomas may have had three additional sons: William, James and John. Here's why:

William: A William Winters/Winders mysteriously appears for 2 years - 1823 and 1824 in the tax records along with Clement (Isabella Twp, Shenandoah Cty, VA). A William Winders of Richland Twp, Fairfield County, OH, was a supervisor on the Ohio Canal and died or was killed in 1826. Clement's name is among the estate papers, and tax records for Clement in OH lead us to believe that he, too, was working on the Ohio Canal, perhaps induced there by brother(?) William.

James: Only appearance of a James in connection with the Thomas of Shenandoah County is in the estate records of Thomas. A James Winders and a Nancy Winders purchased items at the 1810 estate sale. We assume they are married; no James Winders appears in the Shen. Cty tax records from 1796-1830, so we assume they were not permanently living in Shen. Cty.

John: A John Winders was the administrator of the estate of the William Winders, above. Could be William's son, but it is also possible that it was a brother, John. The John Winders who married Elizabeth Paden, who is said to be a "native of Shenandoah Cty" would have to have belonged to a Shenandoah Cty. Winders family in the late 1790s or early 1800s; we have to date found only our Thomas Winder(s) in the records of Shenandoah County during that time period. We also find Clement in the Fairfield Co., OH tax records approximately 1829 to 1834, placing him there at the same time as John and Elizabeth (Paden).

That's our theory--just haven't been able to PROVE it!

My records indicate that Cordelia Winder (my g. g. g. grandmother) was born in KY in 1801. She married William Hamilton Trotter on Apr 5, 1824 in Harrison County, Indiana (not Ohio). I am not certain, but think that they lived in the portion of Harrison County around Hancock Chapel or Palmyra, in the close vicinity of Fredericksburg, IN. which is in Washington County.
Their children (all born in Harrison County) were:
Hamilton Trotter (1826)
John Trotter (1829) who married Matilda Wright (my g. g. grandparents)
William Trotter (1833)
Elizabeth Trotter (1834)
Ann M. Trotter (1842- twin)
Lafayette Trotter (1842- twin)
Cordelia Trotter (1844)
I have been pursuing my ancestors (on and off) since 1969 and have never got into the Winders. I did not know the names of Cordelia's parents. How confident are you that Marsham & Rebecca Winder are her parents? What else do you know about them?

Hello Ann, My wife and I are researching her father's family (Winder) and have strong data to connect them to Daniel winder and Catherine M. Knode. We have burial records for both of them (Spring Grove Cemetery, Hamilton Co., Cincinnati, OH) and many of their descendants. We can fill in most of that data. However, we are stuck on the parentage of Daniel. Family bible and burial record indicates he was born in MD to a John Winder (no mother's name indicated) The family bible indicates he was married to a Sara ? which would match to Sara H. Adams {b.1779-d. 4/28/1830}. We have found on your web page, a John Winder(s) {b.1779-d.2/22/1828} married to a Sara H. Adams Family bible also indicates next generation is John married to a Newcomer woman. These match to John Winder and Ann Newcomer, but we have not found an certain connection to them. This John {b. ca 1775-d. 11/1806} was married twice, to Ann Newcomer and Elizabeth Earhart.
Could you point us towards any information we might locate on any possible connection from Daniel to his lineage? or anyone else to contact.
Thanks, Elna and Jay Thompson

268 (Research):Henry Winder said he was 61 years old in a deposition dated 2 Apr 1881
(= born about 1820); in that same deposition he gave the date of his
marriage to the mother of his son George as 10 Jun 1839 in So. Shields,
and the year of her death as 1844. There were no other surviving
children under the age of 16. George Winder enlisted in Evansville,
Indiana 1 June 1861 and was killed while taking a message to camp at
Cheat Mountain, VA on 12 Sep 1861, at which time he was a private in E
Company, 14 Indiana [Regiment], and George left neither widow nor child
under sixteen years of age. ('Declaration for an Original Pension of a
Father', dated 2 Apr 1881)

In a separate account, Henry Winder says "I came to America with soldier
[his son George Winder] in 1851. I came to New Orleans and from there to
Mt. Vernon, Ind. and then I went to New Harmony, Ind. where I stayed a
week or two, then I came to Evansville and worked on the E. & T.H.R.R.
[Evansville and Terre Haute Railroad] helping in the building of the
road all the way up. I married in 1855, and in 1857 I obtained work in
the R.R. shops of the E. & T.H.R.R. and moved to the city of Evansville,
Ind, and I continued to work in the R.R. shops from that time until
something over four years ago, about five years, I was obliged to quit.
" In this same deposition, he characterized South Shields as "It was a
strange place to me, it was where she [Agnes] was raised." At the
beginning of the deposition, he gives his age as 72 (=born about 1818)
(Deposition 'A', dated 4 Mar 1890, taken from Henry Winder by a Special
Examiner of the Pensions Office Charles Berry in Evansville, Indiana)
Appended to this deposition is a note from Charles Berry, noting that "I
took this case up out of its regular order, owing to the conditions of
the roads and the high water in the Ohio River. I am obliged to work
upon cases I can reach to the best advantage".

Amongst various other depositions attesting to how much money Henry
made when he was working and whether or not he was dependent on his
son(s), there is mention of "raising a family of 4 children" and a
"supposed son" named Willard.

273 (Research):I followed up with a review of Elsie's handwritten material, but I found nothing to prove Jacob, who married Sarah Landis, was a son of John and Sarah Adams Winders, or to prove John and Mary as children of Jacob and Sarah Landis Winders. But something that points to Jacob (married to Sarah Landis) being the son of John and Sarah Adams Winders is that Elsie has a layout of the cemetery with respect to their graves. In a single row, left to right are: 1) Sarah, wife of Jacob Winders; 2) Jacob Winders; 3) Sarah Winders consort of John Winders; and 4) John Winders. WINDERS, Jacob (I25205)

294 (Research):Mary is found in most records as Mary E. or Mary Ellen. The handwritten marriage record of Mary to William Taylor Dent reflects her name as "Mary Ellin Winders." In the Will of Faithy Parks, among the beneficiaries is "Mary Elvira Winders", believed to be the daughter of John P. Winders, who was the executor of Faithy's will. We believe Mary "Ellen" and Mary "Elvira" are the same person because of the crossover of Winders and Dent records. On April 21, 1838, A.C. Winders (aka Adam C. Winders, believed to be a brother of John P. Winders) was the witness to the will of Ann Dent (see rootsweb.ancestry.com/~auntjean/dent/archive/ncro002w.htm). Ann references in her will her son, Thomas H. Dent (Thomas Hatch Dent). In the Will of Thomas Hatch Dent, Josiah Dent is referenced as Thomas' son; Josiah was the father of William Taylor Dent. Mary's sister Elizabeth had married David Green Holobaugh; both couples, along with the Gibbens, had moved to Lawrence County, Arkansas. In the 1880 census, Elizabeth and David Holobaugh's son, James Holobaugh, is living two households below the household of widowed Mary Dent in Black River, Lawrence County, Arkansas.

The following is a biography of the William Taylor Dent and Mary Winders Dent family as researched by Lois Brady (note, Giles is "Josiah Giles Dent"):
