Beal - That the plantation in Rowan County was sold to Margaret L. Beal at the sum of $600 with the consent, approval and sanction of Levi Gheen, James Gheen & Margaret L. Beal - The estate to be divided in to thirds, with Levi Gheen, James T. Gheen, & Margaret L. Beal each receiving a share.

I have seven children for Warren, but it looks like only three actually lived up to 1901. His son James was a James T. Gheen also.

Dear Ann, Thank you so much for answering my e-mail and for all the info. The information that I have about the Winder connections comes from a book that my grandmother, Edna Gertrude Ikenberry Winder[b.1900,KA-d.1993,CA.-m. 1916, KA to William Clarence McKinley Winder(b.1993,KA-d.1962,CA)] put together for her children and grandchildren. Gram used several sources -- Books such as The People Came -- Osborne County Kansas, Vol 1., information from family researchers, such as Carol Dixon(d/o one of my grandfather's sisters -- I can never remember which one-- Mabel, I think). I have all of the books she used and most of the other materials. She also had conversations with the members of my grandfather's family that were still living in the 80's. I plan to be in touch with Carol and with another family historian, Rufus Winder, as soon as time permits.

Woman of the Week
In the Printing Business, She's a Special Type
LAST APRIL Mrs. Arthur Carkeek was 82 years old. But she can still handle a composition stick and set a line of type with the best of them. In fact, she and her son do all the type-setting for the job printing business Mrs. Carkeek started 52 years ago in a bedroom of her home on Harper.

When the business grew out of the house and the youngest of her four children was a child in arms, she carried the baby right along with her every day to the shop. Today Mrs. Carkeek has six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and the shop is in a building on the Detroit river, where Mrs. Carkeek also has a fascinating apartment full of heirloom furniture and flowering plants. From her bed she has a clear view of the Ambassador Bridge. Outside the windows is a roof terrace where she likes to sit until midnight every evening, watching the water and the boats. All the excursion boat captains are her special friends.

ALTHOUGH she was born in Cleveland, the former Jennie Winder grew up in Toronto and went to a private school kept by the widow of a British officer. Mrs. Carkeek's father was a brilliant man: scholar, inventor and minister of the Disciples of Christ church in Toronto. One of his inventions was a little wooden press on which his sermons were printed, and for this his young daughter learned to set type when she was 12 years old. Married at 17 to an artist, Mrs. Carkeek and her husband came through Detroit on their wedding trip. They attended a service at the old St. Joseph's Episcopal Church, then at Woodward and Medbury, sitting in a rear pew. In Mrs. Carkeek's apartment today is one of those same old stately, carved walnut pews, acquired when the church was remodeled. "I prize this above everything, ": she said.

AFTER Mrs. Carkeek inherited the house on Harper, the Carkeeks moved to Detroit. When Glynn Court, west of Twelfth, was still wooded land, she built a house there after her husband's death, giving up the house 12 years ago for the riverfront. While the children were growing up, the family had a camp on Lake Ste. Claire, the "Karkeek Kettle Kamp," where Mrs. Carkeek became adept at kettle cookery. Her love of outdoors and her "green thumb" are apparent in the flourishing plants which line the terrace in summer, the windows in winter, many of them plants she's kept alive for years. She had a fireplace built into her apartment, too, because she still loves an open fire.

IN HER SPARE time Mrs. Carkeek knits afghan squares for the Red Cross, has done two afghans of 108 squares each and is working on a third. Last Christmas time, during the holiday rush, she worked with her son all night, setting rush jobs. She protests sturdily that it didn't hurt her a bit. To prove her point, she related with a chuckle that last New Year's Eve, instead of going to bed as her children thought she had, she got on the street car and went to church for the Watch Night service, all by herself. She goes out to movies, too, but only occasionally, because Greta Garbo is the only actress she'll go to see on the screen.

2838 RECEIVED BAD BURNS PAIL OF TAR CATCHES FIRE AND CHARLES KIMPORT IS BADLY BURNED ON HANDS
Tar Was Being Heated So It Would Spread Easier--
Solder of Pail Was Melted and When the Pail Was Lifted the Bottom Fell Out--
Tar Catches Fire--
Kimport's Presence of Mind What might have proven a costly fire called out the department on Monday forenoon, when one of the small buildings in the rear of the stores in Ellwood block caught on fire from some burning tar and only the prompt work of those at hand at the time of the accident prevented the spread of the flames to the long row of adjoining buildings. The fire started from some tar that ignited while it was being heated, so that it could be put on the roof of the store building occupied by Sivwright, Irish, & Co. Harry Winders and Charles Kimport were at work putting the tar on the new roof. As the weather was cool the tar was being heated to make it spread easier. A pail of tar had been heating over a gasoline stove while the men were on the roof. When they were ready for the new pailful Kimport started to lift it off the fire and the bottom came out of the pail and the contents immediately caught fire. As the contents of the pail had not been stirred, the solder on the bottom had probably melted.

Kimport's clothing caught fire ad when he got out of the little shed where he had been working, those who saw him said he was all aflame. However, he displayed presence of mind and instead of running while his clothes were afire, he rolled over and over in a pile of ashes until he had extinguished his burning clothes. The burns on his hands are severe. He was taken immediately into Sivwright, Irish & Co's store where his hands were bandaged. It will be at least two weeks before he will again have the use of them. The damage to the building was slight and the fire was soon put out by pails of water and the department did not have to lay any hose. Had it spread, the department might have had a difficult job on its hands, as the alley is so narrow and is not easily accessible to hydrants, unless the lines of hose are run through the stores. Should a fire get a good start among those buildings it might cause considerable loss, as the smoke and heat in the narrow alley would be difficult things to fight against. It was noticed that in the yards back of some of the stores, there are piles of paper lying in the open and if by chance sparks from a nearby chimney should fall upon the piles of rubbish during the night, a fire might start and spread to the business houses before it could be extinguished. The merchants should look into this matter and see that no loose paper is left in the rear of their buildings.

Hi Dean,
Charles Robert GROOMS was born abt. 1824 (Source: 1850 Weakley County census) in Todd County, KY. He died in January 1904. (Source: Jonesboro Jots newspaper abstracts Feb. 4th, 1904) in Rutherford. (Is this a county?). He was the third son of Stephen Herring GROOMS and Winiford WINDERS.
He married Catherine A. MATHIS on January 5th, 1873 in Gibson County. (Unfortunately, I didn't record the source.)
He is listed in the 1900 Gibson County Census, District 19. He is also listed on the CW pension rolls for the 31st Infantry #S5851 Gibson County.
We seem to have four relatives in the same unit. Big question? Which J.M. is it? There has been no further information found, except date of birth, that I know of, on James Monroe GROOMS. Perhaps he didn't survive the war. The James M. GROOMS of the 7th USA Cavalry is, I have been told, the son of Robert GROOMS of Carroll County and not our relatives. However, there is a James M. GROOMS listed as a member of the 18th. Tennessee Cavalry, which I believe had men from Obion County.
