309 | (Research):Note by Johnny Walker: In the marriage records of Tennessee, transcribed by Byron Sistler, the marriage of Andrew J. Winders and Rachel Eliza Carsley is listed as Andrew J. McClolpin? to Rachel Eliza Cuisty? on 3 Sep 1849 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee. In spite of the difficulty reading the name in the Sistler index, it is obvious that on the marriage record Andrew was using the surname McColpin while in the 1850 census he appears with the surname Winders. From: Karen Ricks Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2007 1:56 PM Dear Ann, I contacted you a few weeks ago about Andrew Winders and Rachel Eliza Carsley. I have since done some research in Salt Lake at the Genealogy Library there. I found the original marriage entry that Johnny Walker is referring to and it does indeed say Andrew McColpin and Rachel Eliza Carsley. The Carsley is a little difficult to read so I can see where Byron Sistler could have read it wrong since he had so much to transcribe and was not familiar with this particular name. The film number that contains the original doc at the Family History Library is #0321021, Tennessee Marriages. I was glad to find the original and be able to document Mr. Walker's theory. In 1860 living next to Allen H. and Margaret Winders. Also in household is Asbury Winder, age 18, b. IN. In 1880, also in household is M. D. Ricker, niece, age 2, b. 310 | (Research):Notes from Moses Winder through Joseph W. Winder from research shared by Mike Great-Great-Grandson of John Columbus Winder, who was Joseph's son. From: Coleen Wilder Sent: Sunday, November 18, 2012 8:56 PM To: Ann Winder Subject: Re: wilder dna match Glad to hear you are still researching. I went to a workshop on DNA last year in Indianapolis and planned to read some books on the subject but never had time. We have a Wilder contact in our branch that has a PhD in biology!!! He may be able to help us sort things out. I have been in contact with him to help find a descendant of Moses Wilder. Anyway, James Wilder (b. abt 1760) had a brother Moses Wilder (b. 1765) who disappears in 1830 which is when Moses Winder appears - I really think this is our link. Coleen | WINDER, Moses (I11324)

311 | (Research):Obituary provided by M.I. Lumpkin: Mr. George Staples [sic] Winder died at the Soldier's Home in Richmond and his remains were brought to this place and laid beside his wife in the Ephesus Baptist cemetery. Rv. Dupuy of the Rappahannock Christian Chruch officiated. Mr. Winder was 81 years of age. He was formerly a resident of Accomac County, but moved to Essex after his service in the Civil War and remained a citizen of the county until his death. Joel Winder is his only surviving son and Mr. R. H. Sisson, of Dunbrooke, Va., is his only surviving daughter. Mandrid [sic] Q. Lumkin is one of his grandsons. Mr Winder took charge of Mandrid after the death of his mother and treated him as if he had been his own son. The mutual devotion between the two deserves mention, for they were faithful to each other to the end. Mr. Winder was full of dry humor, and the writer recalls with laughter some of his stories so full of human nature and rich in humor. Some of these may be before the public ere long. George Winder was a faithful soldier and a Christian gentleman. Peace to his ashes. The above was accompanied by this letter: November 27, 2005 Ann. I am sending you more information about Geo. S. Winder than you probably want. I don't know any more about the civil war papers then what is written on them. The Winder lineage was written by a Winder family member and given to me years ago. All that are mentioned have been dead for many years. Mary Magdalene Winder (Lumpkin) was my grandmother. She died at the age of 19 in 1897 when my father was born. As mentioned in the obit., my father was raised by Geo. S. His name is spelled wrong. It should be Manrid the same as mine. I have stayed in touch with the Winders all of my life. My father told me that Geo. S. was Jewish and his family disowned him when he married a Christian. This story was also passed on by Joel Winder (his son) to his family. Joel was my great uncle and I knew him well. Geo. S. was living with my parents in about 1920. He was about 80 yrs old then. My parents told me a beautiful story about one of his siblings and other family members visiting him. They had traveled a great distance, driving one of those old cars over dirt roads which must have been a challenge in those days. As my parents described it, they sat under a shade tree in the yard holding hands with tears in their eyes going over the past 60 years of their lives. Years in which they had no communication. Considering the above, I hane always thought of myself as being 1/8th Jewish. After reading the Gen Winder book. I don't know. All of the Winders mentioned are Christians and they came from the same area as Geo.S. Winder. Is there now or was there a Jewish branch of the Winder family? M.I. Tom Lumptin From Robert L. Winder, July 2010 to Ann Winder; This is in reference to a post on the Winder Message Board dated 19 July 2010 from oclarke11 (Olollie Cklarke) concerning Nina Winder and her family. In the 1900 US Census, we find Geo. S. Winder, head of household, gave his birth month and year as February 1839. His wife was Mary E. In the 1920 US Census wie find George Winder, age 80, widowed, an inmate of the Confederate Soldiers Home in Richmond. George Winder was aprivate in Co C, 24th VA Confederate Cavalry. He was also known as George S. Window, according to his listing. G. S. Winder filed for a Confederate pension from Essex County, VA So, George Winder, bio #23473, should be GEORGE S. WINDER, and not George E. Winder, I do believe, as George S. Winder, son of John Dennis Winder, was married to (according to Ollie Clarke, Mary E. Brooke which the census records seem to corroborate. From: Tbl3638@aol.com Sent:«b» «/b»Wednesday, November 23, 2005 11:28 AM Something to add to your Winder tree, maybe you already have it. George Savage Winder was my great grandfather (his obit. lists his middle name as Staples). Born Mar.10 1839 died Oct 12 1924 at the Confederate Soldiers home in Richmond Virginia. He was buried in Ephesus Baptist Cemetery, Essex County, Virginia. He served in the Confererate Cavalry during the Civil war. After the war he spent the rest of his life in Essex County, but he formely lived in Accomac County Virginia. I know nothing of his ancestry but he has many descendants in Virginia today. M.I. Tom Lumpkin, Silver Spring Maryland From James B. Winder, 25 Aug 2012 I am not sure I can help but I will try . The information on George Savage Winder ( my great grand father) that was provided by M.I. "Tom" Lumpkin ( he is also a relative on mine) is incorrect. I have gotten a copy of George Savage Winder's death certificate . His parents were George Winder born in Northhamption County Virginia about 1800, be died between 1840 and 1850. His mother was Anna Small Winder born about 1800 , I know she was still living in 1874 when she started raising 5 grandchildren upon the death of the daughter Charlotte Winder Colony (1830 to 2/10/1874) she was married to William Colony who died in March 1870 of diphtheria. George and Anna also had a son John A. Winder born about 1834. He married Elizabeth Jane Chesser on Jan 20,1874. This was his second marriage. George Savage's grandfather was Robert Winder born about 1775. My family tree is Winder family on ancestry.com , it is open for review and it is still a work in progress. I am not very good with a computer due to drugs I have to take for a back injury so please bear with me on mistakes and misspelling. My name is James B. Winder Sr. but I go by Jim. My Father was Bradley O' Neal Winder, son of Joel Brooke Winder , Son of George Savage Winder. Mr Lumpkin based his information on 1870 census. John D. and Esther A. were the parents of George W. Winder. I know the problem since George Savage and his wife Mary Elizabeth does not appear on the 1870 census. George Savage was a Riverboat Captain working on the Rappannock River . He and his wife appear in the 1880 census . They lived in Essex County Virginia. His wife Mary Elizabeth is still a bit of a mystery. Her father's name was Philip Brooke. I have not been able to find records on him yet. The problem is the spelling of the last name.It may have been spelled Broocke or some other variation. I hope this help. Please stay in touch. 323 | (Research):Peter Haythornth?waite 12/30/12 To: rlwinder@nmax.net, WinderTrees@outlook.com, deven00@charter.net Hello I have looked at your website with interest, particularly as from time to time Winders have married Hathornthwaites (my own name is a variation of this, namely Haythornthwaite). I see that you have the son of Elizabeth WINDER nee HATHORNTHWAITE [13028], namely John Hathornthwaite WINDER [13029], marrying Eleanor HATHORNTHWAITE [13030], "his first cousin", of unknown parentage. Since [13029] is in my own data, I have been looking for this first cousin and have not found her. However, what I have found in FreeBMD is that a John H Hawthornthwaite WINDER married Elleonor HARRISON abt Mar 1842 Runcorn, Cheshire. I have as yet found no PR record of this marriage to cross check the civil registration data, but assuming it is correct, it appears to contradict your website. There are, of course, possible explanations. Perhaps this was Eleanor's second marriage, and she was born Hathornthwaite. I would be interested in your comments on this discrepancy. If this is not of interest to yourselves, perhaps you could kindly pass this email or refer me to someone to whom it might be. My best wishes for the success of your Winder Wonderland Project. 330 | (Research):Robert L. Winder, Oct 2009: The trip to WVU History Collection revealed that the Samuel Winder who appears in the potful of old Ohio County, VA microfilmed records now held at WVU did NOT reside in that county in 1828, I believe it was, in "this county" [Ohio County, VA]. So it appears to me that he did move on into Ohio in the 1820's, when he left Fayette Co., PA. According to Deven Lewis: He died at the home of Catherine Jackaway's sister, Mary Wheatley near Short Creek, now West Virginia. Deven 8/27/2012 That Samuel Winder and Catherine Jackaway were indeed the parents of Robert Jackaway Winder and Lafayette Winder is proved through the diary of Catherine's niece who goes into the extensive history of the Jackaways and reference's where everyone was when and who married whom, including the fact that Catherine married Hiram McCoy after the death of Samuel, names all the kids - and the diary gives Samuel's death location. I also have a copy of the estate record of Hiram McCoy which reflects that RJ Winder was owed money for funds he had extended to Hiram; the executor was Lafayette Winder. Anyway, I'll try to get all the information simplified. There are a few facts that make it impossible for Samuel, father of Lafayette and RJ, to be the same Samuel as the one married to Burnsides. Also, we have the estate record of Marsham Winder (brother of James G) listing all of his siblings, many of whom went back to Fayette Co. and married people in the Redstone area - I've got proof on that. A few facts surrounding Marsham and James G. make it appear that a Samuel Winder may have been the father of some or all of that group - a Samuel who was in Bullitt/Hardin, KY in 1801 - a few years after I found a Samuel Winder in the Fayette Co., PA Militia who was serving with the Brashears who went to Bullitt/Hardin, KY. | WINDERS, Samuel (I23155)

(Trenton New Jersey) in 28 Nov 1850. His parents are Joseph and Ruth Buckman from Lower Madefield, Bucks Co. Pa.(LDS site) Amos was born 19 Mar 1802, I think his father was a state printer. Amos was an attorney and in 1860 ( is listed as Justice of Peace, (Wender) in 1870 (Wilkes Barre) Jean listed as teacher in 1860 (A.B Wieder, PO White Haven, Dennison Twp. Luzerne Co.) I have been trying to find her death as I need to prove she is part of my family. She is listed in 1850 census with brother and maybe mother. 1830 census 2 males under 5 (1826-1830) Isaiah, ? 1 male 20-29 (1801-1810) Amos 1 female 20-29 (1801-1810) | WINDER, Amos Buckman (I22010)

336 | (Research):Summary of www.fold3.com/image/#296717767: Elizabeth C. Winders of Laurence County, Indiana says (after 'swearing on her oath') that she is the late widow of Alfred Winders [the writer probably means 'she is the widow of the late Alfred Winders, but anyway...] who was a private in Co. I, 120th Regt Ind Vols Infantry and is now a pensioner on certificate No. 80664 and she says on her oath that the reason Mary J. Winders the daughter of Alfred Winders deceased was not addopped [sic] with Florence the daughter of the deceased in her pension certificate [is that] she [Mary J Winders] was not a member of her family at the time of her [Elizabeth C Winders'] application for pension [because at that time] she was bound to her grand father Chauncey White, now deceased... The file also contains a long explanation (boiling down to: the clerk screwed up) of why on Alfred Winders' first marriage certificate his name is given as Alpheus Winders. According that marriage certificate (a copy of which is in the file), he (Alfred, actually, although he's named as Alpheus) married a lady named Rebecca Ann Glass in Vermilion County, Illinois on 15 November 1849. Then there's another deposition that gives the names of the children from that marriage and their birth dates: John A. Winders b. 15 Feb 1852, George H. Winders b. 30 Jan 1856, and Mary J. Winders b. 13 Aug 1860. George Winder died 6 Nov 1868. And then there's one from Alfred's brother Joshua, who was 70 when he made is disposition in Tecumseh (Vigo Co), Indiana on 13 Apr 1895 that confirms that Alfred wasn't in military or naval service prior to being mustered into the 120th Regt of Indiana Inf Volunteers. | WINDERS, Alfred (I15486)

347 | (Research):~Edith was born 1880/81 in Richmond Wayne Indiana. Her Father was Joseph Henry Winder, City Clerk. The family were ~Quakers and Edith went teach at Woodbrooke College in Selly oak Birmingham England where she met her future husband ~William Littleboy a prominent Quaker. I beleive she had someone in her family called Jessie and some relation called Hutton but ~for the moment that's all I know, thanks again Sandra (2003) From John H Winder, Feb 2014: ...residing in Swarthmore, Pa in the 1910 census. Shortly thereafter she married Herbert Arthur Shirley (about 1911 or 12), as she was his wife at the time he applied to register with the US Consulate Johannesburg in 1915, when he and Edith and their son Floyd William (B. 5 Aug 1913) were resident at Pigg's Peak, Swaziland. He was a Church of the Nazarene missionary. This marriage evidently broke up, as she returned to the States from Southampton in Oct 1919 (Shirley remarried another missionary woman, Marietta Innis around 1920 and stayed in Africa for a few more years) and was working at the George School in Newtown, PA (it's a highly respected Quaker secondary school). She remained there until 1923, when she applied for a new US passport; she stated on the application that the purpose of her travel was for "matrimony and residence abroad". | WINDER, Edith May (I22077)

I only remember grandpa as a gentle and religious man. He was a deacon in General Baptist Church. He mentioned coal mines, and rail road work. Worked I know at day labor. Married Martha Harriet Doyle dob-1871. She spoke of Holt County and St. Jo (Joseph) Mo., believed to be Indian by many, me?? A Godly man. I visited him near Popular Bluff, Missouri, on the Saint Frances river, a couple miles north east of a small town called Fargus in 1938. I set a line at night and caught a four foot eel. When he saw my catch he seemed to get more excited then I had ever seen him. I had never known anyone to eat eel before or since. As I think about it now, it comes to mind that many people in England and Ireland think of eels as a great treat. The only thing I remember about his heritage was that he was Black Irish. I have never known what that means. Some how I connected it as a child with coal mining, or rail-road work, maybe not. More about John Columbus Winder: A Godly man: Was loved by all. No enemies."
