352 | .......From "Beadland to Barrow" Compiled by the Barrow County Historical Society, Under the General Editorship of C. Fred Ingram, President, published by Cherokee Publishing Company, 1978. ....(several land owners) offered the company one mile of right-of-way for a few dollars, to bring the tracks through this crossroads hamlet (called Jug Tavern). The tracks were relocated and the first Seaboard train passed through on April 24, 1892, with 150 passengers aboard. In appreciation, local citizens requested that the colorful name Jug Tavern be officially changed to Winder by an act of the State legislature. The bill was passed late in 1893, honoring John H. Winder, general manager of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. He was further honored in 1948 when a plaque presented by Judge Shepard Bryan commemorating the naming of the town was placed on the City Hall (now the Fire Station). John H. Winder was born in Raleigh, NC in 1861, son of John C. and Octavia Winder. He attended both the University of NC and VMI, graduating from the latter. Young Winder began his career as a clerk for the Seaboard Air Line Railroad, rising to the position of general manager. In the latter capacity he directed the extension of the railway through Georgia. In later years, Mr. Winder resided in Columbus, OH, as the president of the Sunday Creek Coal Company. After retirement, he lived in Baltimore, where he died in 1952. Response to Barrow Co, GA query: Posted by Steve Winder Surname: Winder Hi Anne, From my information i have it that the town of Winder in the Co. of Barrow Georgia, was named after John H Winder son of William Winder. Both were in the Confederate army, william attaining the rank of Colonel and his son John -Adj. General? William took his family from Cumbria (England) to the Sth.States to protect his business trade he had going with the Caribean. The Winder family in Cumbria having the Right of Administering this trade on behalf of the Duke of Lancaster.Anyhow, John H Winder survived the war and owned most of the land around Barrow County, he also had a Boat on the river there. The town of Winder was named after him! Regards, Steve | WINDER, John H. (I10935)
