907 | Because a William Winders, age 22, was living in the household of Burgess Cranford in the 1850 census and Burgess Cranford was appointed administrator of the estate of a William A. Winders on 10 Nov. 1853, we assume that both records are for William A. Winders, son of Henry C. Winders. No record has been found to prove that William was the son of Henry, since Henry's will did not specifically name his children. However, he was not listed as a beneficiary of the Faithy Parks will, as were the children of John P. Winders, and he was not living with Adam C. Winders' widow, Elizabeth in the 1850 census, thus we have assumed he was the son of Henry C. Winders. | WINDERS, William A. (I25052)

916 | Biographical article by Peter Broughton (Toronto): «a href="../danielknode.htm"»Daniel Knode Winder (1828-97)«b» «/b»the First President of the Toronto Astronomical Club «/a» Obituary, transcribed by Robert L. Winder, May 2000: PROF. WINDER DEAD Was Known As The Campus Martius Astronomer His Life Devoted to Scientific Pursuits An Author and Lecturer A familiar figure on the Campus Martius for years past was Prof. D. K. Winder, who died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. W. Carkeek, 78 Harper Avenue, aged 69 years. His favorite position was near the bust of John H. Bagley, where he would set up a telescope every pleasant evening and charge 5 cents for a view of the moon and planets with a free lecture thrown in. He also wrote occasionally for the press on scientific matters, and became widely known as the Campus Martius astronomer. Prof. Winder was the son of a clergyman at Hagerstown, MD. After serving three years as a professor of music at Huygens college, Cincinnati, he entered the ministry and was pastor of the Church of the Disciples in Cleveland a couple of years. Then he removed to Canada and engaged in scientific pursuits, building the first Bell telephone and the first spectroscope in the Dominion. He was president of the Toronto Astronomical Society in 1867, special lecturer in the Ontario Dental college, first vice president of the Toronto Entomological society , seven years assistant chaplain of the provincial lunatic asylum at Toronto and published several scientific works. Since coming to Detroit in 1879, Prof. Winder has conducted classes in astronomy and published a work called "Positive Proof of Future Life". A second volume on the same subject is now being printed by his own establishment, the Winder Printing Co. Mrs. Winder died in 1896. The professor leaves three children, Mrs. A. J. Roberts of Chicago, and D. C. Winder and Mrs. A. W. Carkeek of Detroit. Rev. L. A. Arthur will officiate at his funeral tomorrow afternoon. The interment will be at Woodmere. [From a newspaper clipping bearing no date or identification, but believed to be from the Detroit Free Press, unknown date in 1897. Probably late October or early November, as another story in the clipping refers to tonnages shipped in the week ending Oct 24] | WINDER, Prof. Daniel Knode (I5155)

917 | Biography from Portrait & Biographical Album of Mahaska Co., Iowa, 1887: WILLIAM W. WINDER, a well-known citizen of New Sharon, is the eldest son of James and Eliza Winder, whose biography appears elsewhere in this book. He was born in Ross County, Ohio, Dec. 4, 1836, and spent his early life upon the farm, but came to Iowa with his family and worked with his father at the carpenter's trade at New Sharon. In 1861 he enlisted in Co. H, 8th Iowa Vol. Inf., and served with his command until May, 1862, when he was discharged on account of physical disability. Returning from the army, he again resided at New Sharon until the fall of 1864, when he returned to Ohio and learned the art of photography. In 1867 he returned to New Sharon and engaged in agricultural pnrsuits, but his impaired health not permitting such arduous labor, he discontinued farming, and in 1870 began work at the business of barbering, which he has since continued. During the year 1870 Mr. Winder was united in marriage with Miss Deborah Sharp, a daughter of Isaac and Lydia Sharp, and to them six children were born, five of whom died in infancy, and one son, Albert C., is living. Mr. Winder is a member of the Masonic fraternity and I. O. O. F. He has filled all the chairs in the fraternity of Odd Fellows save that of Secretary, and has for several years been Tyler of the Masonic Lodge. Politically Mr. Winder is a Republican, but takes no especial interest in politics aside from supporting the candidates and advocating the principles of his party. Mr. Winder is a quiet, unassuming citizen, and a man of irreproachable character, enjoying in a large degree the esteem of his friends and acquaintances. | WINDER, William W. (I116)

From: Caryn Penn Sullivant MOCHEETA@aol.com Sent: Friday, November 24, 2000 5:01 PM My Grandmother was Mary Magdeline Harris. Her parents were Mary Albina Winder and Oliway Chikey Harris. Mary Albina Winder was born in McLeansboro, Illinois. I don't have all the information in front of me right now. She is buried in Wayne County in the Antioch Cemetery in Lodi. Caryn From: Sent: Friday, June 29, 2001 12:25 AM Source: WINDER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [WINDER] Re: Mary Winder 1866 Just a note, I have found two Mary Albina Winders, the one born Sept. 24,1866 McLeansboro, Hamiton Co., Ill. She married Olliway Chikie Harris on October 19, 1882 in Lodi, Mo. I have that she died in Butler Co., Mo. The second Mary Albina Winder was born 1882, d.Butler Co. Mo. Seems coinsidental or maybe, the second was named after the first one, probably a relative. I do not have a death date for the first one, but since she married in 1882, the birth year of the second Mary, looks to be she was named after the first. (Assumption only). Hope to figure this riddle out. Anyone with answers? Lots of Winders lived in all the mentioned areas, and from large families. Got to be linked somehow. Terry Family Reunion Newsletter, 24 Sep 1872, Poplar Bluff: Family Commemorates 106th Birthday of the late "Ma" Harris. [snip] In the beginning Mary Albina Winder was born near McLeansboro, Ill. on Sept. 24, 1866. On Oct. 9, 1882 at the age of 16 she married Olliway Chikey Harris. Chikie Harris died of pneumonia in 1905, a few weeks before the last child was born. The children in their approximate order of birth are as follows: Lum Harris, Ida Jane Harris (Crick Winder), John Raney Harris, Susie Harris (White), Robert A. Harris, William Luther Harris (Willie), Alpha Margaret Harris (Hodge), Maggie Harris (Ward), Moses Chickey Harris, Lloyd Olliway Harris. These 10 children were raised by a very sweet, strong but tender lady which many failed to recognize until after her death. Ma outlived two of her children; however, they were adults. One was Alpha Margaret who was born the first of May in 1895 at Lodi. She married Jess Hodge on Aug. 14, 1920. She had three daughters, Belva, Mina Jean, and the third died a a three month old baby. In Feb. of 1933 when Belva was 12 and Jean was 5, Alpha Margaret died. In the next short years Ma gave up her home to go help raise the girls. In 1939, Belva (Sissy) married Gilbert Ward in Poplar Bluff. They had 3 girls and 1 boy of which two have multiplied to give them 5 grandchildren. Mina Jean married Alva Miller on Jan 14, 1946 while she was a Sr. in high school. Their family began with a baby girl - born March 12, 1948 and named her Mary Margaret. Two more girls followed in the next 10 years. Rhonda born in March of 1951 and Gayle born in July of 1958. [snip information about living relatives] The second child that died while Ma was still living was James Columbus Harris, better known as Lum. He was born on March 16, 1887 and on Dec. 25, 1913, at the age of 26 married Net Carter in Schoolton, Okla. In 1939 they moved to Gallup, New Mexico. Three children were born to them, Billye, Jackie, and Jerry...all girls. One might be left with the idea that they wanted boys. Lum was a scarce visitor in Poplar Bluff. It is remembered that he returned for a few weeks to visit about the year 1943. She was delighted to be with him once again. Perhaps she felt that this would be her last chance to be with him... and it was. He died suddenly of a heart attack June 3, 1944. Net became the grandmother of 4 children and one great grandchild. [snip] Robert A. Harris died on Dec. 20, 1950, after Ma had passed away in Feb. of the same year. Little information could be found about Robert Alfred (Bob). He was the fifth child born to Ma. He married four times in his life time. Around 1910 he married Sis and they had three children, Helen, Audry, and Hollis (Babe). Later in his life he married Dorothy Johnson. With this married he fathered one child, a girl, Carol who now resides in Ark. Bob became blind about six years before his death on Dec. 26, 1956. He had just turned 65 on Dec. 7. On Aug. 27, 1885, Ida Jane was born, Ma Harris's first daughter. She married Charles Winder in the small town of Lodi. She gave life to 15 children while only 7 of them were still living when she died on Nov 29, 1960. The children living were Lawrence, Liman, Norene, Lorene, Wilfrod, Lessie and Richard. In May of this year, Richard passed away. [snip] William Luther Harris was born near Lodi, Mo. on Sept. 19, 1898. On dec. 24, 1922, he married Margaret Elizabeth "Lizzie" Duckett at Poplar Bluff. He died May 21, 1961. [snip] They had three children [snip] Moses Chickey Harris was born on Feb. 2, 1903. On Jun 18, 1923, he married Merle Hill of Poplar Bluff. On Sep 12, 1931, their first child was born to them, a girl named Marie. Nearly eleven years later a second child was born, this one a boy, Lloyd. On Jan. 21, 1971, Mosey died. [snip] 3 CHILDREN STILL LIVING Susie Harris was born on May 9, 1891 (?). She married Leb White on Feb. 14, 1904. They had 4 children: Rachel Albina, Gladas Peralee, Gordie and Curtis. They had 8 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. Leb died in 1970. [snip] Maggie Harris was born Jan. 4, 1901. At the age of 15 she went across the creek to marry Shade M. Ward on Jan. 8, 1916. Maggie and Shade had 6 children. Three have passed away: Opal, Conchetta, & Beulah. The living children are: Gertie Berry of Fredricktown, Lois Clouser of Fredericktown, and Leroy Ward of Whittier, Calif. Shade and Maggie have 5 grandchildren and 9 living great grandchildren (2 deceased). The baby of the family, Lloyd Ollaway Harris was born June 17, 1905. On the 20th day of June, 1928, he married Verna Martin. They lived in St. Louis for a number of years before moving to Poplar Bluff, enabling Verna to take care of her mother till her mother's death. Lloyd has recently retired from the Mo. Pacific Railroad. They had no children; however, many people feel that they can call on them as parents if needed. | WINDER, Mary Albina (I11295)
