The Young America is located on Red Elephant mountain, just below the lower junction of the Empire and Georgetown roads and six miles from the latter place. It is owned and worked by J. N. Winders and James Kirkland. Eight years ago they worked
out a rich pocket and then sunk over one hundred feet without finding anything. Nothing further was done until last spring. The old shaft was then cleared of mud, rock, and 120 feet of water, and after sinking for a short distance another ore deposit was found, which has yielded from $199 to $1,288 per ton. Seven thousand dollars was taken out before the shaft was 240 feet deep. Fifteen men have been kept at work and over $25,000 were expected to be obtained during the last month, of which the writer has no report.

  • Notes
    • From Past and present of DeKalb County, Illinois, pg 478:
Thomas Jefferson Winders, editor and proprietor of the Malta Record and Creston Observer, was born in Nevada City, Colorado, January 20, 1863, a son of John N. and Susan (Powell) Winders, both of whom were natives of Washington county, Maryland, the former born in 1829 and the latter in 1834. In 1855 the parents came to Illinois, settling in Polo, but after two years removed to St. Joseph, Missouri, where they remained for a year and a half. On the expiration of that period they removed to Nevada City, Colorado. The father was both a civil and mining engineer and he opened and conducted a gold and silver mine, which he owned for some time, later disposing of it to an English syndicate. He remained in Nevada City until 1875 and then removed to Silver Plume, Colorado, where he lived until his death, which occurred in 1897. In 1871, Mrs. Winders, accompanied by her little son, returned to Polo, Illinois, and there resided until called to her final rest March 28, 1905, at the age of seventy-two years, four months and ten days.

      According to John H Winder:
«u»«b»John N. Winders «/u»«/b» (born about 1829 in Washington County, MD and died 1897 in Silver Plume, Colorado) may well have moved west to Ogle County with his cousin Hiram in the early 1850s. The Illinois census of 3 July 1855 enumerated John N. Winders as a resident of Buffalo Township in Ogle County, in a household consisting of two males aged 20-30 (John N. and possibly Hiram?) and one female aged 20-30 (probably John's wife «u»Susan Powell «/u» (born 18 Nov 1832 in Washington County, Maryland and died 28 May 1905 in Polo, Illinois). John N. and Susan (Powell) Winders were married in Mountain View, Washington County, Maryland on 14 Dec 1850, according to the 1 Jan 1851 edition of the Hagerstown «i»Herald of Freedom«/i» newspaper. According to 'Past and Present of DeKalb County, Vol. 2'«b» «/b»they moved west to Illinois and settled in Polo, but after two years, they moved on to St. Joseph, Missouri, where they settled for a year and a half, before moving west to Nevada City (or Nevadaville), Colorado. John N. Winder was trained as an engineer and gained mining experience in Colorado, where he developed a gold and silver mine that he eventually sold to an English syndicate. He remained in Nevadaville (now a ghost town) until 1875, and then moved on to Silver Plume, Colorado, where he lived until his death in 1897. Life in the boom towns of Colorado apparently held little fascination for John's wife Susan, and within a few years of the birth of their son «u»Thomas Jefferson Winder «/u» in 1863, she and Thomas had returned to Polo, where they were enumerated in the 1870 census as residing in the household of her father, Upton Powell. She remained in Polo for the rest of her life (she died 28 May 1905) and is buried in Polo's Fairmount Cemetery. [7]
