Notes - (Research):Joseph was a Civil War Veteran.
He enlisted in the 87th Illinois Infantry.
He was born in Blount or McMinn Co., Tennessee.
Joseph's father was one of two brothers, either born to William or James Winder and Magaret.
William and James were brothers who were in BLount and Mcminn Counties, Tennessee.
Both of them died between 1844-1847.
There is a photo of Joseph W. Winder and his wife, Elizabeth Foster with their son Andrew taken around 1890.
Joseph served in Civil War from Illinois. He enlisted 13 August 1862, rank of private, in the 87th Illinois infantry, same day as his brother-in-law Henry E. Manning. Brother George W. Winder enlisted two days later. Joseph Winders Civil War record it states: He enrolled 15 August 1862 in Company "A", 87th. Ill. Infantry Vols. commanded by Captain John Anderson in the Regiment commanded by Col. John E. Whiting. He was admitted to Baptist Church Hospl. Memphis TN. Feb. 15, 1863 and returned to duty Mar. 23, 1863. He was honorable discharged Oct. 19, 1863 from service at Regimental Hospl. by reason of Aphonia (Loss of speech or voicelessness caused by disease or injury) during the Civil War. He received a pension of $14.00 per month until he died.
