Looking for info on Sarah Winder born circa 1817. She was married to a John C Simmons. I do not know where marriage took place. There were several children but I only know names of a son, William Jefferson Simmons, a daughter, Nancy who first married a Riddle (s) and then a King, and there was a daughter Lucinda, who married a Riddle (s) and then she married a Winder. William Jefferson Simmons was born in 1836 (or thereabouts). He first married Amanda Vest in Morgan County, AL where the Simmons family lived. They had 5 children and only one was a son. That son was Elbridge Elrey (Elry) Simmons born in 1859 in Morgan County, Alabama. William Simmons then married a Brewster lady after Amanda died. His third marriage was in Morgan County , AL in 1870 to a Ruanna Winder. She died and he married again. Elbridge Simmons was my husband's grandfather. William Jefferson Simmons was living in Texas from about 1860 to 1870 before he went back to marry Ruanna Winder in AL and then they moved to Arkansas. Has anyone heard of these people or have any info about them? Who were Sarah Winder's parents and where was she born? I wonder if Ruana Winder was a cousin of his. Also the Winder that his sister Lucinda married---could that be a cousin?

I wish I knew more about my husband's Winders. His great great grandfather, John C. Simmons, born in either North or South Carolina, married a Sarah Winder, and then they moved to Alabama. They were there in the 1850 census. My husband's great grandfather married a Winder for his third wife. (first two died). This same great grandfather had a sister who also married a Winder. I do not know particulars but they lived in Alabama, around the Birmingham area, I believe. John C. Simmons was born in 1796 so I would imagine his wife was approximately the same age, but probably younger.

I have been told that the Simmons and Winders may have come from NC. I know there was a lot of Indian blood in these people but they really worked hard to cover it up. They were close-mouthed in my estimation.
      [snip]
I think the Simmons and Winders lived in Morgan County, Alabama. William Jefferson Simmons' first wife, Amanda Vest, lived around there. Some of the Vest family still live in Alabama. The Vests were related to Glasscocks as George Washington Vest married Parthena Glasscock. I think the some of the Vests and some of the Simmons left about the time of the beginning of the Civil War. They moved to Arkansas and some stayed. Some moved to Texas.
