Here is what I know of my TX roots:
In the 1850's my ggg-grandparents Bright Marshall GROOMS (1790-1862) and Catherine WINDERS (1791-1862) moved to Bowie Co., DeKalb, District, Mill Creek Settlement. The 1860 census shows Bright & Catherine both age 60, with a male child name John GOODEN living with them. Note: The researcher Rubye May says that Bright & Catherine died and were buried in Red River Co., TX... But in 1860 they were living in Bowie Co.!!!

Most of the children stayed and lived out their lives in Weakley Co. Tennessee. At least three of the children moved to Bowie/Red River Co., Texas with their parents, and one went to Springfield, Missouri. In 1860 my gg-grandparents Right Marshall GROOMS (1830-1862) and Eliza Ann RAY (1834-1868) were living next door. Lucy Jane GROOMS (1818-October 04, 1860 in Texas) m. James POPE. After her husband Samuel NEW died, Evalina GROOMS (b. 1824- d. Texas.) accompanied her parents to Texas where she married a second time to Mark G. PIPKIN on February 03, 1861.

After her husband died in CW, and father-in-law and mother-in-law died, all in 1862, Eliza gave birth to Catherine Right GROOMS March 05, 1863 then packed up her 7 children and returned from Texas to Weakley Co. HHR says by oxcart. R.M. Grooms, Pvt 10th Texas field Btry, formerly known as Capt Hynson's/Capt Pratt's Co, TX light artillery, CSA. Enlisted June 21, 1862, Mooresville, TX died from complications of wounds and/or measles on August 31, 1862. We believe he's buried around Little Rock, Ark..

At least two of Bright's nephews also moved to TX. Reason Edward GROOMS (1822-1879) m. Nancy A BIRDWELL in 1854 (prob Bowie Co, TX) and died in Dekalb, Bowie Co.,TX. (Reason and his cousin Right Marshall lived next door to each other in Texas, and enlisted in the same unit in the Civil War, although on different dates and towns.) Bright N GROOMS (b. abt. 1828) m. Susan A LAWSON February 15, 1860 Red River Co, TX.

Reason and Bright N. GROOMS were the sons of my ggg-grandparents Stephen Herring GROOMS (1794-1833) and Winefred WINDERS (1791 or 1800-aft.1850). Bight M. and Stephe H. were brothers. Catherine and Winefred were sisters...the debate is if they were twins.

Oh yes, my g-grandparents were 2nd cousins.

Thanks, Ben Grooms Herron Bristol, TN

My ggg-grandmothers Catherine and Winefred WINDERS were born in NC. They married Bright Marshall GROOMS (August 17, 1813 in Davidson, Co.) and his brother Stephen Herring GROOMS (abt 1816). Bright and Stephen GROOMS were born in GA, but their parents married in Dulpin Co., NC August 04, 1777. (Caty HERRING m. Elijah CROOM but she and the children started using GROOM after Elijah's death. The brothers that went to Weakley Co., TN added an "s" while the brothers that went to AL remained GROOM.) My g-grandparents were 2nd cousins.

I can't make the connection but suspect that Bright and Stephen GROOMS were also Catherine and Winefred WINDERS cousins. Bright and Stephen GROOMS great-aunt Ann BRIGHT married John WINDERS. (The executors of William BRIGHT's will were his son-in laws Stephen HERRING and John WINDERS.) I believe Catherine and Winefred's father was also a John WINDERS.

Catherine and Winefred's parents may have been living in Davidson or Williamson Co., TN during the War of 1812. (The county lines changed a lot.) After marriage the GROOMS boys moved to Todd/Christian Co., KY (another line change) . (There were other WINDERS from Dulpin Co., NC in Todd Co., KY at this time.) Then around 1825 they moved to Weakley Co., TN. Stephen died in Weakley Co. 1833 and Winefred stayed there until she died after 1850. Bright and Catherine moved on to Bowie/Red River Co. Texas during the 1850's where they both died in 1862.
