BIBLE OF MARTHA L (SPEAR) GROOMS- Contributed by Mrs. Bettye G Burgess 2720 Sandy Lane, Ft. Worth TX 76112
This Bible, owned in 1976 by W.E. Cuffman of Denton, TX is very old and fragile with dim handwriting that is hard to read including some erasures.
Jordan (Jurden) P. GROOMS of Weakley Co., TN is not listed in the bible, but he married Martha L SPEAR on 19 Jan 1863. He was a Mason, and he and his wife were active in the Meridian Cumberland Presbyterian Church. They are bothe buried in that church's cemetery. Martha L SPEAR, who was the daughter of Willis and Sarah Major GROOM LE SPEAR, died on 1 Oct 1902. Tradition says that Jordan P GROOMS was the son of Stephen GROOM and wife, Winnifred WINDERS. Stephen GROOM served in the War of 1812, fighting in Georgia where he is believed to have been born. He was probably married in Ky.
Wilson KELLY married Mary E SPEAR 15 Jan 1860. Zay (?) POPE GROOMS was born 21 Aug 1888 and died 28 Jul 1890. Nancy M SPEAR, daughter of Willis and Sarah, was born 10 Oct 1840.

There is a Bill of Complaint in Weakley Co., TN dated 22 Sep 1903 made by C. C. GROOMS, Bettie CARLTON and husband, T.H. CARLTON, citizens of Weakley Co., TN against J.P. GROOMS Heirs (he died in 1888 and wife died 19 Oct 1902). the heirs are : W.J. GROOMS, residence unknown; Fannie WAGSTER and husband, D.W. Wagster of Missouri; Mattie CUFFMAN and husband, R. CUFFMAN of Texas; B.R. GROOMS of Missouri; Kate GROOMS; C.C. Alexander GROOMS; Lena DOLAN and husband, Bob DOLAN; Birdie WOMBLE and husband Bob WOMBLE; and Minnie GROOMS, all citizens of Weakley Co., TN. They charge that since these lands cannot be advantageously partitioned and are only suitable for farming purposes, that the land should be sold. The nearest towns to the farm are Dresden and Greenfield, Tennessee.
