      JOHN SPENCER HOWEY CAME TO SHAWNEE COUNTY, KANSAS WITH HIS BROTHER, LAFAYETTE HOWEY, IN 1869 AFTER THEY BOTH SERVED IN THE UNION ARMY DURING THE CIVIL WAR. ANOTHER BROTHER, VAN BUREN HOWEY, CAME TO KANSAS BEFORE THEM, IN 1857, AND STAKED A CLAIM TO EIGHTY ACRES IN TOPEKA TWP, SHAWNEE COUNTY.
