- Robert L Winder research notes on Susan L. Winder
Susan L. Winder was born on 20 July 1835, probably in Randolph Township, Portage County, Ohio. She has not been found in the 1850 census, but apparently went to Hardin County, Ohio in the early 1850s. Marriage records in Hardin County show her marriage to Asher Dille on 15 November 1855. Asher Dille was the son of Abraham Dille and Deborah Post, and is listed with that family in the 1850 census of Hale Township, Hardin County, Ohio, "next door" to John C. Garwood and Thomas McCall. In 1850, Asher Dille was 21 years old and a cabinet maker. No further record of Asher Dille has been found. Family sources had indicated that Susan Winder was married to John Lake. This was confirmed by a quit claim deed of 1864 signed by Susan L. Lake and John H. Lake of Elkhart County, Indiana, relinquishing any claim to the land owned by Susan's grandfather, Lewis Bloomfield. The 1870 census for Locke Township, Elkhart County, Indiana lists:
Lake, John age 39 works at saw mill born Ohio
Lake, Susan age 35 born Ohio
Lake, Eddie age 11 born Ohio
Lake, Cora age 6 born Ohio
The 1880 census adds Jesse Lake to the family, age 4, born in Indiana. This census also shows that John H. Lake's father was born in Virginia. This agrees with the 1850 census of Hale Township, Hardin County, Ohio, which lists Harrison Lake as head of household for family #477, born in Virginia, and includes John H. Lake, age 19, born in Ohio. An 1874 plat book of Elkhart County, Indiana, on page 72, lists John H. Lake, farmer, in section 15, born in Hardin County, Ohio, came to Elkhart County in 1863.
The Nappanee, Ind. /News/ on 7 June 1883 reported the death of John H. Lake of Walkerton, Indiana and identified him as a former citizen of Nappanee. John was killed by lightning while seeking shelter beneath a tree. A week later the same paper reported that Elihu and Clara Morlan had gone to Walkerton to work for Mrs. Lake. (Susan Lake was their aunt). After John Lake's death, Susan apparently returned to Nappanee, Indiana and operated a laundry there. She also married a man named Truex (first name unknown), who apparently pre-deceased her. On 12 Aug 1896, Jesse Lake (Susan's son) was reported to have been summoned to Elkhart by the critical illness of his mother, Mrs. Susan Truex, and Susan's death from heart disease was reported a week later, again by the Nappanee (Ind) News. Susan and John Lake are both buried in South Union Cemetery, Locke Township, Elkhart County, Indiana.
