Subject: DeCormis-Winder connections
I came across your family history site. I am somewhat knowledgeable about DeCormis family history, and was looking for further data. I found several errors in your DeCormis-Winder data, which I have listed below, if you want to check them out for yourself. My grandfather compiled a lot of notes, family bible records and original newspaper clippings that various DeCormis descendants had saved. He wrote his research into a small monograph in 1949. I have recently been going over those notes and monograph.
I mention these errors (1) in hopes they may help you understand your family lines better and give you better clues to pursue further research, and (2) to avoid seeing these errors perpetuated on the Web. I have briefly included the evidence that proves each error.
By the way, the Anna DeCormis, wife of Levin Y Winder, and the Joseph DeCormis, real husband of Mary Susan Winder, were siblings. The father of both was Joseph DeCormis (ca 1794 - 1844) and the mother was Ann Granville (1797-1830). So siblings married siblings (You already listed Levin Winder and Mary Susan as brother-sister).
With every warm wish,
Chris McManus
-------------------------------------------
You have: Edward DECORMIS Married: Abt 1841 Died: 1843-1850: Edward married Mary Susan WINDER, daughter of Dr. George Harmanson WINDER and Mary HUDKINS, about 1841 1. (Mary Susan WINDER was born about 1819 in Accomack Co, VA 2 and died in 1843-1850 2.)
Errors:
1. It wasn't Edward DeCormis who married Mary Susan Winder. It was his nephew Joseph DeCormis (1819 - 1847), according to Mary Susan's obituary in the Religious Herald of Richmond, VA, June 4, 1846. The name of Edward's wife was Martha Whitelock.
2. Edward didn't die 1843-1850, he died in 1873, according to his tombstone. The death dates 1843-1850 do fit in with Mary Susan's real husband Joseph DeCormis, who died Nov 3, 1847, acording to
his tombstone and obituary.
