MAN FOUND DEAD ON RR TRACKS NEAR OWASSA:
Members of the L & N section crew discovered the badly mangled body of a white man age about 50 on the tracks about one mile south of Owassa early Wed. morning. An identification card in the billfold indicated that his name was Philip A. Winder of East St. Louis, MO
A coroner's inquest was held by Dr. E.A. Price and it was decided that the man most probably came to his death by falling off a moving train during the night. the identification card gave an address in Richmond, CA, to notify in case of accident and Sheriff W. D. Lewis sent a wire to the address shortly after the body was discovered, but as The courant goes to press, no reply has been received.
The body is being held at Cope Funeral Home where it will be examined by Dr. Nelson I. Grubbs, state toxicologist of Mobile, for any evidence of foul play, though thus far, no such evidence has developed."

Hello Ann! You can imagine my surprise when I finally found the name I had been looking for.......for my elderly aunt who is 81 years old. Her father's name was Phillip Aaron Winder, and he worked for the railroad, and it was rumored that he died after being hit by a train. I don't know if he was married to my grandmother or not, but they did have two children. Here's what we can gather........ Phillip Aaron Winder married (?) Missouri Christina Simmons. She was born July 30, 1901 in Batava, Arkansas. They had 2 children: Aaron Arley Winder (born 9/8/1920 - died 9-19-1999) and Pebbel Euvera Winder (born 2/6/22). When the children were 3 and 2 years old and they were living in Geneseo, Illinois....Phillip Aaron ("Ernie") left on a train and never came back. Missouri ("Tiny") then moved with the children to Colorado and married John Pierce Steele and had 6 more children. "Ernie" was always a mystery, because no one ever heard from him after he left. I was in shock to see the picture of his Dad, James Robert Winder. It looked just like Aaron! Aaron was a sweet, gentle man.....very small and slight in stature....with a nice moustache (like James) and the same nose and face, and a wonderful, deep bass voice. He could recite Robert Service poetry from memory (pages of it!) and could sing very well. He retired from the Army, and was a wonderful artist and excellent chef and had a catering business. Pebbel lives in Oregon and is 81 years old. She would love to have any other information available about her family.
Sincerely, Toni Harding [2]
