Paul graduated from Evansville High School and attended Northwestern University; also the Indiana University Law School. He was a member of the Evansville football team in 1914-15 and on the Indiana All-Star team in 1915. He was attending Law School at Indiana University when World War I broke out, and he enlisted in the Army, 12 May 1917 and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant 15 Aug 1917 and assigned to Company C 59th Infantry, Third Division on 27 Aug 1917. On 5 Jan 1918, he was assigned to Company B 7th Machine Gun Battalion, and sailed for France 2 Apr 1918. His battalion was continuously engaged during his entire military service in France, taking part in the Battles of Chateau Thierry, the Marne, St. Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne. He was killed in action at Claire-Chenes Woods while leading missioned officer of Company B. was killed.

The American Legion Post at Evansville is named the Funkhouser Post in honor of Paul and his brother, Albert. Because of this honor and to give my younger readers some insight into World War I, the service records of these two boys have been given in more detail than would ordinary have been done.
