Notes - From: Allen Winder pdqroc@citlink.net
[snip] I have since been to England chasing the ghoasts of my ancestors,as my great grand father Edward Winder came over for the gold rush in 1848-1849 Also the listing for Eddie,Rose, and Joseph are all related to me...they would have been aunt`s and uncles{Edwards children}.
I also have just recieved a manuscript from the Univeristy of Oregon written by a man that was on the same ship with Edward Winder {great grandad},when he left Boston on March 12th 1849 heading for the port at San Francisco to reach the gold fields.Up until the time that I recieved the manuscript,we always assumed he came around the horn, but it seems they left the Harriet Neal {ship from Boston} at Chagres at the Ismus of Panama on the Cuba side and took small boats up the river for a distance and rode pack mules the rest of the way through the jungle to get to the Pacific Ocean side of the Ismus of Panama where they got on another ship that took them to through Ampala on Fonesca Bay,Nicarauga on on up to San Blas,Mexico, where they had to catch another ship to San Francisco, where they disembarked about July the 4th 1849.Had they gone around the Horn it would have taken considerly longer to get to the gold fields.
Wow,this has been like a detective story and I am no where near finished.Tell me about the dna program,if you get a chance.
Allen Winder
P.S. The huge piece missing in all this is the fact that I cant locate the ship that my great grandad came over on from England. - (Research):1880 census shows Joseph Winder, age 20, living with Edward's family. Brother?
