My great-grandmother and her sister my great aunt were daughters of Lionel Winder. My Great aunt was Flora, her sister I think was named Mattie or Amelia, I only knew her as grandma. They had a brother named Ralph, pronounced Rafe.
They moved from Siloam Springs Ark. To Jasper, Mo which is near my home. I and my brother were very fortunate to be able to visit these wonderful ladies often while they were being cared for by my grandparents and my grandmas sisters.
Flora married Ulysses Lowenstine, Her sister, my great grandma married Bert Schott.
Flora lived to be 102, her sister lived to 96.

I can find out more by asking my grandmother or her sister. I know where Lionel and his wife plus Flora and her husband and her child, and I believe Ralph are buried. The graves are a short distance from where Lionel's house still stands. As a matter of fact I have been with Flora and her sister (my great grandma) at that cemetery decorating graves back in the 60's and 70's. My great Grandma is buried in Parsons Kansas. My grandma tells me that Lionel came to Ark. from England and was working as a farm hand at different places that would hire him. He could read and write. He met my great great grandmother who never learned to read and write, in Siloam Springs and later took his family to Jasper Missouri to homestead. Flora had 1 or 2 children that died as children, I can remember at least one portrait of Floras young girl in her house. Mattie my great grandmother married Bert Schot in 1900 in Carthage, Mo and had 4 children, Marie, Ivor, Lela and Mattie my Grand mother the youngest who was born in 1917. I know more and can find out more but do not know where to start. I find my self interested in the stories and memories more than the dates and details

[snip]My great grandma's name was Mattie, not Martha. She is the one that married Bert Scott who I believe was from Idaho. I Know where they lived, it is only 1/4 mile or so from Lionel's house. This is where Ivor, Lela, and Marie lived but before my grandma was born. Later they moved to Bartlet Kansas where my grandma was born. My great grandma had headaches often and was certain she would die young so in an effort to ensure my grandma's education my grandma was sent to school with her sisters at the age of 4. My grandmother later finished Labette County Community College at the age of 18. My grandma taught school for a short time before she married my grandpa in 1938. Of course my greatgrandma lived to be 96. My grandmas older siblings Ivor Schott married Helen both were teachers and spent their careers in Alaska where Ivor was superintendent of Kodiak schools. They never had children. Marie Schott was also a teacher, married twice I only new her later husband Wayne Silcott who was older than Marie and a veteran of WW1. She had 2 children. Lela Schott also a teacher married Rudy Graf son of Swiss immigrants. They had one boy named Richard. Lela was very sweet and generous, Rudy was very pleasant and fun to talk to. He bragged about being born on the last day of 1899. I knew them both until I was in my 30's. They spent their retirement volunteering at the children's home in Springfield Mo. Mattie Schott, married my granddad Glenn Knewtson in 1938. They had 5 children my dad is the oldest. Yes, I know Flora, Mattie my (greatgrandma) and I think even Ralph died the same year. There is no reason other than old age. My great aunt and my great grandma had all their faculties and past away with very short illnesses. It was the same with all my old aunts and uncles so I grew up thinking all old people died easy. I never new or met and only heard of Ralph seldom. I have wondered why didn't Flora and my great grandma ever visit him, their own brother. They spent their later years less than 70 miles apart and I never remember them visiting each other. I do know that Lionel had several hundred acres near Jasper and he left nothing for his daughters, he left what he had to Ralph who kept it all. Flora married Ulysses Lowenstien from Jasper, Mo, Ulysses' dad was from Germany and was in the U.S to avoid murder charges. The name Lowenstien was only assumed and was bogus, no one knows what his real name was. Flora and Ulysses had one or 2 children, but as I mentioned they died very young from pneumonia I was told. There was a very regal portrait of a young girl all dressed up that was in Floras house in Kansas when I was a boy. It must have been 3 feet tall. Flora did not like having her own picture taken at all, no one knows why. Flora had such a problem with pictures and for some reason she ordered my aunt Lela to burn the portrait of her daughter shortly before her own death. I had 2 great grandmas, and 1 great grandad that I got know when I was young man. and my 2 oldest girls even remember their great great grandma and still have 2 great grandmas they visit sometimes. These things always fascinate me. I have asked my grandma and Marie for more information before, they really know allot but when we are together I hate to bog them down with countless questions when they could be sharing valuable time with my kids so I have to remind myself to be quite and let someone else talk.
