Subject: Aaron Winder, son of Abner Winder and Hope Ballinger
Hello Ann,
My name is Sharon Ann Kaasa and I live in Norway. I noticed your website address on a message to the Legacy Users Group and visited your site, which is very nicely done. I have long noticed your last name and have thought to make contact. I am not a descendant of the Winders (that I know of), but a gr-grandaunt married a Winder and my gr-grandparents named one of their children Aaron Winder Huff. I "inherited" the role of family historian after my father and grandfather. They have followed, not only our direct lines, but also siblings and associated families as far as possible. However, the identity of the parents Aaron Winder - who married Phoebe Van Pelt - has always eluded me.
Happily, I found Aaron on your pages and now have some information to work on. I wonder if you can tell me more about his family? Here is a little about Aaron's wife Phoebe and her family:
Aaron Winder married Phoebe Van Pelt, dau. of John Van Pelt and Mary Dever. Phoebe was born 7 July 1813 in Highland County, Ohio. The Van Pelt family, John Van Pelt and his wife Mary Dever together with their children officially joined the Quakers in February 1808. John Dever, together with his family, migrated from Virginia to Ohio to claim the bounty land that was awarded to him for military service. At that time, the overland route to Ohio was known as the Wilderness Road. It was extremely difficult and dangerous to travel. Therefore, many traveled by boat from Virginia to Pennsylvania/NJ, or traveled the Pennsylvania Wagon Road to Pennsylvania. From there access to the areas that were to become Ohio was much easier (later known as the Emigrant Road). Mary Dever, daughter of John and Mary Dever met John Van Pelt either on his father's boat, or while in Pennsylvania and John Van Pelt and Mary Dever were married in Pennsylvania in 1797 and continued on to Ohio as man and wife. Their first child, was born in the territory that was soon to be known as Ohio. John and Mary Van Pelt had 12 children, the ninth was Phoebe.
Phoebe was reported married to Aaron Winder 22 June 1831 in the Fall Creek Monthly Meeting. Phoebe was the younger sister of Nancy Van Pelt who married Daniel Huff - my gr-grandparents. It was Daniel Huff and his wife Nancy Van Pelt who named one of their offspring Aaron Winder Huff in honor of Phoebe's husband.
John Van Pelt (Jr.), Phoebe's father, was the son of Captain John Van Pelt and his wife Susanna Dungan. I don't know how interested you are in these lines (Van Pelt, Dever, Huff), but you can let me if more information is desired.
Can you tell me more about Aaron Winder, son of son of Abner WINDER and Hope BALLINGER? I have, of course, already helped myself to the ancestry information on your website :-).
Best regards, Sharon Ann Kaasa
