- From Robert L. Winder, Jan 2006:
In checking my notes, I have come to the tentative conclusion that the first Rev. Cuthbert Winder, who heads Stephen Winder's chart, is the same person identified in my notes as Cuthbert Winder, Winkfield, whose will is, according to Mrs. Jill Lincoln, who researched this for me in 1987, in the will index of Berkshire, 1612, ref. clk L292. I am not sure of these references, but as I recall from talking with Mrs. Gloria Bangerter in Salt Lake City, who transcribed a lot of kentish wills (she is a descendant of John Rex Winder), the books were usually identified by a combination like L292, in which the letter represented the name of the clerk who "wrote" that particular book, and 292 would be the page number therein.
My notes show that this Cuthbert, who died in 1612, had the following children:
(Most of these dates and facts were supported by various parish registers of births, marriages, deaths, etc, again by Mrs. Jill Lincoln in 1987).
1. Francis, baptized 24 Feb 1579 and buried 25 Feb 1623
2.John, baptized 26 Nov 1581, married Jane Hurst, Winkfield Parish, 9 May 1608. Jayne Winder, widow of John Winder buried 1653.
3. Thomas, baptized 18 Jun 1584. Stephen says this is the Thomas, "citizen of London and grocer" who died without issue in 1651. I did not feel that I could "prove" the parentage of this Thomas, grocer, etc.
4. Samuel, baptized 5 Feb 1586, matriculated at Trinity College, Oxford on 18 Jan 1604, aged 17, BA Merton College 1908, MA St. Edwards College, 1611. This is from "Alum. [for Alumni, of course] Oxoniensis", a register of attendees at the various colleges of Oxford University. This reference lists other later Winders from Berkshire, most of whom belonged to this tribe.
5. Susanna, baptized 21 Nov 1594
6. Richard, baptized 27 Dec 1590
