- (Research):Henry Winder said he was 61 years old in a deposition dated 2 Apr 1881
(= born about 1820); in that same deposition he gave the date of his
marriage to the mother of his son George as 10 Jun 1839 in So. Shields,
and the year of her death as 1844. There were no other surviving
children under the age of 16. George Winder enlisted in Evansville,
Indiana 1 June 1861 and was killed while taking a message to camp at
Cheat Mountain, VA on 12 Sep 1861, at which time he was a private in E
Company, 14 Indiana [Regiment], and George left neither widow nor child
under sixteen years of age. ('Declaration for an Original Pension of a
Father', dated 2 Apr 1881)
In a separate account, Henry Winder says "I came to America with soldier
[his son George Winder] in 1851. I came to New Orleans and from there to
Mt. Vernon, Ind. and then I went to New Harmony, Ind. where I stayed a
week or two, then I came to Evansville and worked on the E. & T.H.R.R.
[Evansville and Terre Haute Railroad] helping in the building of the
road all the way up. I married in 1855, and in 1857 I obtained work in
the R.R. shops of the E. & T.H.R.R. and moved to the city of Evansville,
Ind, and I continued to work in the R.R. shops from that time until
something over four years ago, about five years, I was obliged to quit.
" In this same deposition, he characterized South Shields as "It was a
strange place to me, it was where she [Agnes] was raised." At the
beginning of the deposition, he gives his age as 72 (=born about 1818)
(Deposition 'A', dated 4 Mar 1890, taken from Henry Winder by a Special
Examiner of the Pensions Office Charles Berry in Evansville, Indiana)
Appended to this deposition is a note from Charles Berry, noting that "I
took this case up out of its regular order, owing to the conditions of
the roads and the high water in the Ohio River. I am obliged to work
upon cases I can reach to the best advantage".
Amongst various other depositions attesting to how much money Henry
made when he was working and whether or not he was dependent on his
son(s), there is mention of "raising a family of 4 children" and a
"supposed son" named Willard.
