Hi Dean,
Charles Robert GROOMS was born abt. 1824 (Source: 1850 Weakley County census) in Todd County, KY. He died in January 1904. (Source: Jonesboro Jots newspaper abstracts Feb. 4th, 1904) in Rutherford. (Is this a county?). He was the third son of Stephen Herring GROOMS and Winiford WINDERS.
He married Catherine A. MATHIS on January 5th, 1873 in Gibson County. (Unfortunately, I didn't record the source.)
He is listed in the 1900 Gibson County Census, District 19. He is also listed on the CW pension rolls for the 31st Infantry #S5851 Gibson County.
We seem to have four relatives in the same unit. Big question? Which J.M. is it? There has been no further information found, except date of birth, that I know of, on James Monroe GROOMS. Perhaps he didn't survive the war. The James M. GROOMS of the 7th USA Cavalry is, I have been told, the son of Robert GROOMS of Carroll County and not our relatives. However, there is a James M. GROOMS listed as a member of the 18th. Tennessee Cavalry, which I believe had men from Obion County.
[snip]
Charlie
