• Notes

  According to Robert L. Winder (Sep 2000): John Cook, born 3 December 1825, who married Martha Winder his first cousin) on 19 October 1848 in Elkhart County. For several years John assisted his father in his business, then in 1854 he went into the banking business as a partner in the Salem Bank of Goshen. John acted as Cashier of this bank, which continued under his management until the bank was sold in 1865. In December 1865 John Cook removed to New York, where for a year and a half he was engaged in the commission house of Robertson & Cook. He then returned to Goshen. Soon after his return he became a stockholder and Cashier of the First National Bank of Elkhart and moved to that city, where he still resided in 1874. He also became a partner in the Elkhart Paper Mill.
